Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall were WWI aviators with the Lafayette Flying Corps. They wrote Mutiny On The Bounty and this novel, Falcons OF France. If you'd like to know what it was like to fly an early 180 HP Spad with a single machine gun, this is the book for you. It takes the reader from basic flight training through air combat and the end of the war. I first read it in Junior High School and it's still a good read. My copy is not for sale!
