Why use "gull wing" design on Archer and Joby?

So, I am just curious why these new aircraft use this wing design over a straight wing design like a Cessna 210 or Otter? Is there some aerodynamic advantage to this design and benefits that are now more easy to implement with the use of carbon fiber and other composite structures?

If a "modern" 182 or 210 were to be built these days, would they have this type of wing design?

I don't feel that it is related to the distributed electric propulsion along the wings since the Daher Eco-Pulse and Electra Airflow are traditional flat wing designs.

No need to get into the weeds about how "stupid" electric is or that it will "never work" or anything like that. I would like this discussion to be focused on the aerodynamics of the wing layout. If the DEP causes this design then please inform me.
