A question for you ironmongers:
For my HM293 project I need to weld a tab to the forward cabane tube, to which the rear cabane strut will be bolted. My forward cabane tube is 3/4" x .058 and the tab is .080 sheet (all 4130).
Henri Mignet designed the HM290 shortly after WWII as a modernized version of his original Flying Flea HM14. Rodolph Grunberg updated these plans as his HM293 RG. Fred Byron also modified Mignet's plans as his HM290/3 FB.
Grunberg's plans show the strut with tab in profile only with a weld bead along the base of the tab. No further info.
Byron's plans show the strut with tab both in profile and rear-view. His drawing seems to show bead lines on both sides of the base of the tab.
I was under the impression that tabs should only be welded on one side of their base. Not sure if the idea is to avoid wasted effort or to avoid somehow weakening the first weld with a second.
What do you expert welders recommend in this case? Because this involves cabane struts, getting things right is important.
Thanks in advance.
