I’m starting this thread for some upcoming 277 Rotax testing. I just unpacked one I will be using for the testing in stock configuration. We need a baseline horsepower number we can use to compare the industrial and 1/2 VW engines to. Since we will be using the same dyno bars for every engine, we will get some useful numbers here.
This will not be a tear down and rebuild instructional series, but I will be completely disassembling the engine and replacing all bearings, seals, gaskets, and piston rings to insure accuracy of the test results.
Once we complete testing in stock configuration, we will be building a wide-band expansion chamber with can muffler for the little 277 to see what it will do with a tuned exhaust.
Thanks to Stevel for doing the packing and shipping duties. Very Special thanks goes to LarryK for the generous loan of a brand new, in-the-box Rotax 277 exhaust system for the dyno tests. We will be doing some thrust tests with an ultraprop on all engines so we have thrust figures as well as horsepower to compare.
I’ll get this torn down and parts ordered right away but tests will come after the 670 redrive configuration tests are completed. Weights and tear down pics coming this weekend.
