Pete, Jumping in here, the Bitts engine package weight limit is 155 pounds. Tom and I have been talking of ways to keep the VW conversion at, or below that number. I have removed the 582 Rotax from the Bitts, and am now installing a Rotax 503 for this summer. After that is tested, perhaps next year, I will install a VW on the prototype....Ed

My reardrive was under 160lbs for what it's worth Ed. That included exhaust, prop, spinner, carb intake etc. Did not include oil.

Chad

Hi Ed,
my front drive is also below the 155 pounds ;D
I am very interested of the little Bitts, perhaps it can be my next project?
Please send more informations by mail (known) to me.
with best regards
Juergen

Hi Chad...I still want to put a rear drive on one of the racers. Ultimately, I see it as the way to go.
Hi Juergen....I am travelling for a couple days, will get something sent when I get back,,,,Ed

Yeah, what Ed said. ;D

Pete, we'll see what happens, but I think I can get the 1915cc down to a workable weight. But before any of that happens, I have a Sonerai to finish and a Skylite to rebuild. But it will happen. If I can get the VW down to 150-155 I think it would be a good performer. And I have an ace in the hole that I can use if necessary. I just love small bipes, just for the joy of flying. Can't help it.

Tom

Yeah, what you said..... 8)

I know its an old topic, but.... What about a dry sump? Won't reduce overall weight, but would allow you to shift a bit rearward.

Actually, for the Lil Bitts Biplane, the engine weight as it applies to CG, is not the issue....Its just the weight itself. Theres plenty of space to shorten the nose moment.... Keeping the airplane weight below 440 pounds, for strength reasons, Is why I set a weight limit for powerplant package. If I didn't, people would start bolting on Continentals and Lycomings.....When that happens, You might as well built a regular Pitts.....
In actuality, Dry Sumping a VW will probably make it GAIN weight. Think of the holding tank on the firewall, the attach brackets, all the houses, scavenge tubes, and maybe a scavenge pump....Ed
