A couple of weeks ago I was host to a scavenger hunt that was looking for a set of Continental intake rocker arms. Seems that the intake and exhaust rockers for the small continentals are different? Apparently there have been at least 4 versions of these rockers made over the years. The stated reason for wanting intake rockers is that they have no oil holes and reduce the oil usage by not squirting the intake valve stem. 2 versions of the rockers in my collection. Neither of which are what were being sought.
How does this relate to the VW? Here is the HVX version of a VW rocker per Hoover via a screen grab:
What is missing? An oil path to the valve side of the rocker. With the stock valve adjusting screw the factory drilling to the valve side is completely plugged off. With the Mazda/Ford style adjusters this passage is again functional..................once cleaned of the years of accumulated black sludge.
What else is missing? Maybe nothing? Maybe the little hole in the Continental rocker in green below?
Maybe Hoover tried this and found no value or...............
Did he have the same problem I found. I tried to drill this hole in a VW rocker - and gave up.
Unlike the Continental rockers these are HARD, as in file hard. That little dimple came from a cobalt drill bit after grinding a small flat.
I may lash together a caveman RC EDM after I get winter ready and give it another try.
The scavenger hunt? None of the rare Continental rockers with no oil holes on the valve side were found.
