Hey all, I think my evening plans today are doing an initial pass on rotation capabilities of my flying wing design, with the main goal of seeing if it’s possible at all (or if I need to go to a fly-off design), and if so, to see how it constrains landing gear placement and ground angle.
For the level of fidelity I’m going for today, the plan is to just use AVL to determine moments around chosen wheel contact points… no investigation of dynamic behavior, changes in moment with suspension extension, or anything else. Will model ground effect in AVL — very curious how much a difference this will make.
If anyone has done a similar exercise, always interested in lessons learned. And if folks are interested in how it goes, let me know and I’ll post a bit of a progress report as I work through it.
The ideal goal is to find a configuration that gives acceptable gear placement for ground dynamics, acceptable weight on nose gear when empty to avoid tail sitting, rotation possibility at 1.2 Vs, and main wheels touching down first at and below 1.6 Vs.
