Wing Span Lengthening for Motorgliders

It seems there's a few 'motor gliders' (MG) which was created by simply lengthening the wing span. Even real gliders do this with plug in wing extensions. So what is stopping a MG builder from doing the same? Obviously the wing spar would need to support the addition load. I would also imagine control surfaces may require resizing. What other modifications would be necessary?
