I came across this old promotional add for an aircraft wheel that incorporates leaf-spring type suspension into the wheel spokes. I did a little more research and found some additional photos, as well as the manufacturer's test. My question is: Why are we not still using these? This seems like an excellent solution for something like a Bowers Flybaby or Mini-Max, where the wing struts are attached at the undercarriage, and therefore negates the use of any traditional aircraft suspension. One would think this would be a great alternative, and have advantages over simply running low tire pressure as a substitute for suspension. Does anyone know of a reason for why this seemingly simple & elegant wheel design is no longer in widespread use?
