I purchased these airplanes in April of 2021 from the original builder, Roger Chase (award winning builder and factory test pilot for the kit manufacturer, US Light Aircraft). Both had been in storage for multiple years. N58RC had been a flying and registered airplane, and it had a condition inspection by an A&P completed shortly before I purchased it. After I purchased and moved these planes to my town, I found some issues that prevented me from flying it such as leaky brakes but found that I did not have the time to finish getting N58RC ready to fly (although I did get the brakes converted from the custom system to Black Max brakes). The B-Model Hornet (aka Super Hornet) was never completed and would need to be registered by the buyer as a new build. Hopefully that would allow them to obtain the repairman certificate so they, as the builder of record, could do the future annual condition inspections.
2007 HORNET N58RC: (A-Model) Built by Award Winning builder and factory test pilot, Roger Chase with ELSA Airworthiness issued 8/20/2007. Complete Includes: 65 HP Hirth 2706 with approximately 110 hrs; 64" Warp Drive 2 blade propeller; InterVOX intercom system; BRS Rocket whole-plane parachute; Dual Magnum wingtip strobes; landing light; tail stand; dual tanks; factory instrument pack; electric flaps and elevator trim; removable doors; Stits Poly Fiber fabric and Aerothane paint; custom seats by Armand Tuborg; brakes converted to BlackMax brakes with parking brake valve.
From what I can see, it needs the following in order to get it ready to fly: engine surges at full throttle, but otherwise runs well; instrument panel needs to be reconnected.
As I mentioned earlier, N58RC is registered as an ELSA with the FAA. So, you can take and pass the 2 Day Light Sport Repairman Inspection Course and, as the owner, complete your annual condition inspections yourself.
B-Model Hornet: (aka Super Hornet) This is the larger, newer, dual-strut model of the Hornet as sold by US Light Aircraft. While no engine is included, it can accommodate up to Rotax 912 engines. Unfinished and unregistered. Completed through fabric and paint by Award Winning builder and factory test pilot, Roger Chase. Factory options included tail stand and dual fuel tank. No engine nor instruments.
From what I can see, it primarily needs an engine and instruments installed. Probably needs the brake system converted from the custom system from the factory (like I did for N58RC {above} with BlackMax brakes).
Currently these planes are sitting in my hangar at KSMX in California. The hangar rent has just increased significantly, so I would like to sell both airplanes and stop spending money on the hangar rent. I have purchased a flying Quad City Challenger II which I now fly, so I no longer need these two Hornets.
I don’t have the time to get these planes flying anytime soon. So, I am selling them as a package deal and both as projects. If they don’t sell, I’ll disassemble them and store them in the hangar with my Challenger. At some point, I’ll get them flying, and then the price will be much higher.
