Does anybody know of any sliding or telescoping wing design that actually works well? Links? I have looked at a bunch of patents and none seem viable.

The idea is to slide (telescope) the outer wing in into the inboard portion of the wing so as to lower the wing area during cruise. The smaller outer panel goes into the larger inner panel so as to 'taper' the wing area outboard.

During approach, the wing is slid out, and flaps put down as normal.
