We have at least one member building one of these — 5/8 Sindlinger Hawker Hurricane — and while it’s more of a pleasant daydream than a practical project for me, I went ahead and ordered the plans from the designer’s son Lyle Sindlinger ([email protected]).

They are not cheap at $300 plus shipping ($35 from Washington State to Florida) but wow, what a set of plans! Over 450 sq ft of drawings including 24 6’ x 3’ sheets with full size wing ribs, fuselage frames, and tail surfaces. There are lots of addenda and corrections, so clearly a lot of care to make everything clear, even fuel and electrical system diagrams with tubing and wire sizes. And of course, there is plenty of detail on the manual retractable landing gear.

I may or may not actually build one, but it won’t be for lack of detail in the plans. It would be a great retirement project, a respectable cross-country machine (165 mph TAS @ 65% on a 150 hp O-320), and so much fun to take to local fly ins.

Hmm, maybe RAF 303 (Polish) Fighter Squadron colors....

...or a North African campaign Hurribomber complete with tropical chin filter. ;-)

EDIT: I have attached a couple of period Sport Aviation articles by Fred Sindlinger and one of his friends from Puyallap.
