I am looking at a local project that is for sale. I have checked the FAA registry and it was deregistered as “expired” back in 2019. I know the conventional wisdom is that a deregistered plane is just lawn art. I also know that there is a path to recertification if the registration is expired vs. revoked or surrendered. I am going to look it over good tomorrow to see if I want to buy it. I probably will, if for nothing more than parts that can be used in a future build of a one-off design I have in mind. But as a complete airframe minus engine, I would be willing to take the time to do the paperwork and legwork to get it re-registered. I am retired and have a good bit of time to devote to writing letters and visiting the FSDO. I am in no hurry to get the project rebuilt, as I have a CTLS that I am flying, and another project that I have almost completed. I just have been kicking around the idea of an electric aircraft, and this airframe would work for what I’m thinking.

So, putting aside the, “It’s a waste of money because it’s just a lawn ornament now” philosophy, has anyone much experience re-registering a plane that has just expired?
