I'm trying to learn more about rivet selection; but something confuses me - I see most websites state the rivet width should be 3x the max plate thickness. But I also see plenty of aircraft using 1/8 rivets on plates thicker than 1/24. If this is true, why do things like 1/8 x 0.5 rivets exist? Is the 3x rule meant for steel structures or something?
