My next big project since used JT15D's are starting to look "reasonably" priced.

Hello friends,

I've been a lurker on here for sometime and I usually don't say much, just a little background on me, I'm a proud Glassair II owner/operator and an Air Traffic Controller by trade, with a degree in Professional Aeronautics <--(Doesn't actually help me)

I've spent the last few months doodling around with my plane trying to make it go faster, the boys up at Ly-Con in Visalia are amazing at unlocking horsepower and shedding engine weight. As as I continue to enjoy my plane I have been contemplating going faster, but not just an incremental upgrade like perhaps to a Carbon Lancair Legacy. But some much, much faster.

So I bought some books, many of which were recommended by Orion, and read alot of research papers, watched hours and hours of CAD tutorials for various programs. I also began looking at alot of real world designs and did my best to shed off the idea that some designs wouldn't be a fit for a "light", "homebuilt" experimental.

So I made a decision to begin conceptual design on a plane that I plan on building once I retire or get a bit closer to it.

I want the plane to be Delta wing, mainly for the reason of large amounts of fuel storage and the "rule of cool" I've always liked the look of the Delta jets, like the F102/106, Mirage III/2000. To me those planes just looks like the way I always imagined a plane is supposed to look. The power-plant I'm considering is the Pratt and Whitney JT15D-4D since they can be had high time for a pretty decent price.

Basically I am just doing a conceptual design / feasibility study. And once it is complete I will probably contract an aerodynamicist to take the design and fine tune it. Then hopefully I can make friends with a structural engineer go help me through that stage so I don't pull a Jim Bede... And then the part that I think will take a very long time... designing all the parts in CAD to prepare for CAM. Around this stage I can make use of the empty space in the hangar to build a full scale mock up of the cockpit to help with ergonomic design, avionics placement ect....

Anyways I wanted to let you guys know what I have planning. I hope I can rely on some of your knowledge, especially since I know just barely enough to be dangerous :)

Anyways I've been playing around with a design in Sketchup since I'm not sure which CAD program I want to shell a ridiculous amount of money on a license for yet. Here is a picture of what I've been up to so far.

Its a Mirage 2000 scaled down to about 75% with a full scale me being partially shoehorned into the cockpit....

What CAD / CFD software would you guys say is best for what I'm trying to do?
