Development of this product started 5 yrs ago, originally using UltraSonic technology to assist pilots in landing on glassy water. Though it worked quite well, there were a couple of bugs that couldn't be filtered out through the software, and the use of UltraSonic technology was abandoned.
FlareAssist annunciates the aircraft's altitude above the surface (starting from 30'), down to 1'. Accuracy is +/- 3". Audio can be plugged into the intercom via a MP3 plug, or hardwired into the intercoms non-muting input. Power requirement is 12 VDc, less then 400 milliamps current draw and may be hardwired or plugged into a cigarette aux power plug. Weighs less then one pound, and on the Searey this mounts to the underside of the wing strut mounting plate, just outside the canopy.
FlareAssist is not just for Searey's, it may be installed on any experimental aircraft. In order to do so, we will need to know the offset distance from the bottom of the radar plate to the surface, or keel.
Units are now available for sale, priced at $2495.00 Information, ordering, and a video is available on my website:
