After much carefull thought I have decided to set aside my own design efforts and buy a set of plans for the Hummel H5.
Of course, paying a visit to Hummel Aviation had a big part to do with it, although I had been eyeing the design for quite a while.
Particularly since I got to sit in this guy:grin:!
I also tried Hummel Bird N504LD on for size.
Even though they say the Bird is a good choice for a first time builder, they do not recommend it for low time pilots. As Terry (at Hummel Aviation) described it, you rest your arm on your knee with your fingers on the stick and just thinking about what you want to do is enough.
The H5 is more docile, a bit faster and, as far as I could tell, is virtually identical in construction. So IMHO it would also be a good choice for a first time builder. I think the hardest part of building it is getting my brother-in-law to remove his 'divorce debris' from my garage!
Material cost is estimated to be around $3400, not including engine.
